Additional info and tips about visiting Fort Myers

Things to do and places of interest in Fort Myers

Fort Myers is a southwest Florida city rich in heritage. While you might think of this city as a beach-friendly destination, there is so much more to explore when you are in Fort Myers.

  • Soak up the history of the city by visiting the remains of the Calusa Village and take a guided tour of Calusa Heritage Trail on Pine Island while you are there. Then, visit Mound House on Fort Myers Beach, which teaches you about the history and culture of the Calusa Indians.
  • Fort Myers has an abundance of parks and national refuge parks. Enjoy the excitement in Manatee Park where you see manatees swimming in the warm waters. You also have the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge where there are more than 8,000 acres devoted to birds and other animal species.
  • For the kids, take them to a game during spring training. Alternatively, you have the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, where there are bald eagles and hands-on explorations. The Imaginarium Science Center is another good place for the kids where they can learn about the weather, aquatic life, and anatomy.

Tips and tricks for visiting Fort Myers

Whether you are here for the first time or you are a returning visitor, it is useful to know that life here in Fort Myers is constantly changing. Therefore, you can do yourself a favour by familiarizing yourself with a few facts and handy tips.

Alligators

First, you should be aware that alligator attacks are rare, but they can happen. They enjoy grassy areas near canals, lagoons, and lakes. Therefore, avoid these areas unless you are under a guided tour with an expert guide. Do not let children walk around alone.

Sharks

When the waters heat up, sharks tend to come inland. You will notice that beaches close if there is a shark sighting, so do not ignore the warnings. If a beach is closed, do not go into the water. Also, stay out of the water from 5 pm – 9 pm from May – September when sharks frequent the shore.

What to Pack

Since you are on the coast, you must realize that the weather can change quite quickly. Bring along light layers so that you can add or remove as needed. The cool ocean breeze might make the coast feel colder than when you head inland. Also, be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection.
