This was a complete bait and switch!! I reserved a Intermediate SUV that would carry 5 adults and 4 pieces of luggage. On arrival, I was told that my reservation was only for a SUV that would hold 5 adults but only 2 pieces of luggage!! That does not work for a 2 week holiday. The only solution was paying an extra $45 per day to get the next size SUV which they called Standard but it only held 5 adults and the 4 pieces of luggage!! To make matters worse, I have written Alamo to ask for clarification and refund but they have not responded to my email!!!

Customer service was great. They didn't try to scam me with hidden fees or falsehoods about coverage. Another in my group rented through enterprise and they tried to make him pay all sorts of extras that aren't required (we rented in San Jose). I also had some car issues on the way back and they were helpful and understanding.

Felt sort of corralled into the upgrade I got. Booked a 7p 4x4 online and was told in person it was only 2WD. Was then told the Land Cruiser I got was the only one left on the lot. 3 hours later my brother in law got a Land Cruiser and was told it was the last one on the lot.

Budget in Costa Rica, our flight was delayed so we called the 1800 number where an automated message told us that 'if your flight is delayed, not to worry they have the flight info and will hold on to your car, even if they don't have the flight number we hold your vehicle for 24hrs' So that was a relief until we got to the Budget booth in the airport where they told us they didn't have our car and that we should have let them know. I told them we called and heard the message and they responded with 'oh you didn't call the Costa Rica line' They ended up having a car we could use but it was a larger more expensive SUV and needed 'a better insurance package' so we had to pay more than we 'budgeted' for. Use another car rental place in Costa Rica there's lots to choose from.

Car was clean but there were a bunch of big scratches and dings. Reflectors and caps on bumper were missing. Fortunately got a video of the car prior to departure since they tried to blame them on me when returning it. They tried to pressure me into buying extra insurance by putting a $3000 hold on my credit card in case of accidents. I don't suspect this is different from other rental car agencies in the area though. Took over an hour standing in line to pick up the car. No address to return it caused me to drive around for 30 minutes trying to locate them. Facility was clean, bathrooms were provided, checkin counter at airport is easy to find. Overall experience was mediocre.

The car was great, clean and had a full tank. The efficiency of pickup and drop off is not very good. A lot of employees running around everywhere but only 1 at the counter.

They forced me to pay $250 for "mandatory insurance" on arrival without prior notification. They were extremely inefficient and it took 2 hours to pick up the car despite 3 desks being open and only 7 people ahead of me in line. I suffered a minor damage in the car in a parking lot which I promptly reported to Avis at the time, but the dealer was totally unaware of it and made me repeat the process which took 1.5 hours and nearly caused me to delay my flight. They then coerced me to sign a "legal document" in Spanish only (all other documents in English) which stated facts that I did not agree with and threatened to make me stay in Costa Rica for 6 months. Total scammers!

I prepaid $700 for my rental car on line understanding that I would have a pay for insurance. Estimates from my guidebook indicated that it would be $10-$30 per day for a 9 day trip. When I arrived I was charged $825 or $90 per day for insurance alone. I had prepaid so I couldn’t change car companies and felt cheated. I was told I should have read the fine print. If that is the policy, it should be made very clear the the cost of insurance will exceed the cost of the rental.

Wouldn’t accept my credit card insurance coverage without a written letter—which is not a legal requirement but something they do so they can sell you their insurance. It was labeled as “on site” at airport. It was not. The car was pretty beat to hell.

I would avoid. Nice people but terribly disorganized. We paid for an SUV but when we arrived they said they didn't have any. Didn't really offer a solution (said we could just wait a few hours for an SUV but they are unsure if one will come) so we took a sedan. This car then broke down on us (but thankfully they were quick to fix it). They also ended up making us pay for insurance as they didn't accept my credit card's insurance.

It was not just poor, it was terrible. They had no cars, they asked me to pay more than $700 for a car, rather than the $203 quoted - that's an unbelievable amount for the expected extras. A dirty car was returned while we did the paperwork which they said we could have. Then they took it away and said it had brake problems. We waited into the night as they said another car was on the way. They couldn't tell us when it would arrive. After a couple of hours we told them to cancel and walked to a local hotel. We got a shuttle to our destination the next morning. AVOID, AVOID!

This was listed as a rental provider that has his office in the terminal....which they had. But it was only a "fake" office because we then still had to take a shuttle ride to the rental office, which increased pickup and drop off time. More importantly, the up-selling of insurance products was very annoying. The initial quote at the counter was twice (!) as high as the listed price on Kayak and it required a lengthy call to my credit card company until they believed me that I don't want/need to buy the Loss/Damage waiver. I also had to explicitly ask for the government mandatory liability insurance only and not the 100% liability coverage which I was automatically offered. At the end I still had to pay a ~55% higher price than I had expected from the Kayak booking. Every client before us had to go through that lengthy and painful negotiation and that made the pickup process very long because the line was moving very slowly. The car itself was perfect and the return process was quick and easy.

Although it was relatively inexpensive they did not disclose the mandatory 3rd party insurance requirement you had to pay - I even had the letter from my credit card company saying they covered the collision insurance ( I had that after reading the fine print that letter was needed- full price of the rental should be disclosed at the time of reservation

Have travelled often but never experienced such a scam. We were told they had no cars when we arrived and there were none available anywhere. After an hour of pleading they somehow got us a car as it was a huge favor and it ended up being the same Toyota Landcruiser Prado which I had reserved 2 months earlier but at twice the cost. Have never been taken advantage of like this.

We had requested a 4x4 because we were going to drive through the mountains and in dirt roads in Costa Rica. They gave us a car that needed the wheels to be balanced, and when it rained the car would slide through the mud. It was unsafe, and we couldn’t return the car sooner because we were far away. When we went to return the car the staff explained to us that because it was high season that was the only car they had left. Instead of renting us the car, they should’ve been honest so we could find a car to rent elsewhere.
