Terrible car. Tires had hardly any tread on them. We ended up with two flat tires. Then they charged us for the tire that we had to change because it was flat. The flat tire was due to lack of tread

Lots of extra charges and insurance upon pick up making the rental price deceiving. Pick up was not smooth. was advertised as a terminal rental facility, it was off premise. I was specifically looking for an agency at the airport and was comparing price on that basis. It was not far but there was no signage or instruction on how to get there. No Avis signs. We almost walked, but there were no sidewalks. Pick up was 2 hours with no one in line before us. There were several currency conversion issues with deposits and three currencies.

Be prepared and it will be a mediocre experience - expect arguments. 1: Bring letter from Credit Card Company with your name and last 4# outlining coverage or you will pay for additional daily coverage (we did this thank god) 2: You will pay minimum 16.99/day mandatory CR govt insurance - just know that in advance (that was rate for Nissan Versa) 3: Video walk around of car - these guys are shiesters (argued with me for 15 minutes about a preexisting ding that was noted on the prerental inspection because it was drawn on top of bumper instead of middle of bumper) 4: Argue the 12% fee they try and tack on I think it was called “convience” or something along those lines.

We had a not-so-great experience recently with Avis. I booked a specific car literally MONTHS in advance - probably around 4 months in advance. I asked for a SUV and wrote the specific day/time we would be arriving. We arrived right on time. The only good aspect of this experience was Oscar, the gentleman who helped us. He was friendly and professional. Even though we arrived on schedule, they didn’t have the car we had requested. Instead of an SUV, they only had 2 options. A compact car or a truck that was a manual transmission, so I wasn’t able to drive it. Oscar said we could just wait around and hope that someone comes to return a car - but even then he couldn’t guarantee the car we wanted, and he didn’t even know if anyone would come at all to return a car. We had 2 small children who were tired and hungry, so had no choice but to get the compact car. And with the roads of Costa Rica, this turned out to be extremely uncomfortable. Altogether, this was an extremely disappointing experience.
